In her abstract works on predominantly large-scale canvases, Lilian Mühlenkamp (b.1991) explores the tension between the material’s inherent autonomy and the artist’s deliberate control of the process, employing a technique she has developed herself. Her works initially engage the viewer on an emotional level; they seek less to be understood than to be felt. Emerging from her synaesthetic perception of reality, the paintings resist clear definition. They evade immediate comprehension, sustain attention, appear dynamic and alive, and gradually unfold through repeated, closer viewing, revealing themselves differently each time. Something elusive always remains. The creative process reflects this intention: through a water-based technique that allows for both unpredictable moments and precise guidance of the material, the autonomy of each individual work emerges: abstract, yet consistently conveying form, spatiality, and movement.
